In 1804 Caulaincourt was appointed aide-de-camp to Louis Bonaparte, with the rank of chef de brigade (colonel) of a dragoon brigade.

It was given its name by King Louis Napoleon of Holland in honour of the victory of his brother, emperor Napoleon in the Battle of Austerlitz.
He rose to prominence under the French-dominated Kingdom of Holland, being appointed Minister of Justice in 1806 by Louis Bonaparte, and to the Council of State and as head of the Court of Appeals in The Hague in 1810 by Napoleon.
In the next year he appointed his infant nephew, Prince Napoleon Louis Bonaparte (1804–1831), the elder son of Napoleon's brother Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland, Grand Duke of Berg; French bureaucrats under Pierre Louis Roederer administered the territory in his name.
On 21 December 1806, King Louis Bonaparte named both Van Zuylen van Nijevelt and Jean-Baptiste Dumonceau as Marshals; Daendels received the title a few months later.
