In the late 19th century, Baluba demographic pressures drove Lulua groups into what became the Belgian colonial area of Luluabourg, later Kananga.
The residence of the prefect Apostolic was the mission of St. Joseph de Luluabourg, situated a few miles to the south of the station of the Belgian colony of Luluabourg (now Kananga), in the district of Lualaba-Kassai, the chief town of which was Lusambo, residence of the district commissioner.
In 1944, a Force Publique garrison in the town of Luluabourg mutinied against their white officers.
The city of Kananga (formerly known as Luluabourg) is at the center of the district, but has a separate administration.
