When General Benjamin Adekunle decided to invade Aba instead of Owerri he was relieved and decided to stay back and let Major Timothy Onwuatuegwu handle the Nigerians.
The following year, as a Captain, he was posted back to the Congo as Staff Captain (A) to the Nigerian Brigade HQ at Luluabourg - under Brigadier B. Ogundipe.

In July 1968 the Nigerian General and commander of the 3rd Marine Division Benjamin Adekunle began making plans for an invasion of Aba, Owerri, and Umuahia in a military operation he nicknamed Operation OAU, Adekunle boldly stated that he would be able to capture all three cities in 2 weeks.
After the Capture of Port Harcourt Benjamin Adekunle started Operation OAU which was a draw for both sides but cost Nigeria 21,500 men.
