Arish Mell lies about a mile due south of Lulworth Castle and East Lulworth, both of which were established at the head of the valley that runs down to the area of the bay and may have been the original direct route to the coast for the estate.
Eventually, the houses were inherited by her cousin, Thomas Weld in 1754.
The coast and land to the north and around the village is owned and managed by the Lulworth Estate (see Lulworth Castle).
It is also of interest "The Luttrell Psalter", a famous medieval manuscript dated by the 14th century, contains inside its binding an armorial bookplate of Thomas Weld (1750–1810) of Lulworth Castle, one of the book's owners, and the motto on the plate's ribbon reads "nil sine numine".
