The M61 motorway, part of the national motorway network between the M60/M62 (Manchester orbital motorway) and the M6 (Preston) was opened on 28 November 1969 by Fred Mulley, Minister of Transport.
Subject matter has previously focused on the Korean stem cell scientist Hwang Woo Suk (on "Decimal Places"), the building of the M62 motorway around Stott Hall Farm (on "Build Around Me") and the American TV series The Wire (on "Sobotka").
The M62 coach bombing happened on 4 February 1974 on the M62 motorway in northern England, when a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) bomb exploded in a coach carrying off-duty British Armed Forces personnel and their family members.
The signal was at a relatively low power (100w vertical polarization, 100w horizontal polarization) and was broadcast from a transmitter at a site owned by Yorkshire Electricity Distribution PLC (YEDL) at Ainley Top, near the M62.
The area south of the M62 has been cleared of all structures and almost all concreted areas, to make way for the Omega commercial development and the building of a new urban village called Chapelford.
