The PadKontrol was released in 2005 as a competitor to the Akai MPD and the M-Audio Triggerfinger.

The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), led by Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves, had been the governing party since 2001; it faced the main opposition Movement for Democracy (MpD), led by Carlos Veiga.
Bands awarded contracts included The Cherokees, The Deakins, MPD Ltd, Tony & The Shantels (from Shepparton, Victoria), The Chosen Few (South Australia), and The Clique (Perth).
The MED’s and MPD’s, which made use of readily available power and transmission units, were cheap to operate but noisier and not as comfortable as locomotive-hauled rolling stock, a fact which made them unsuitable for Inter-City journeys.
