In 1989 Broadbent pioneered the reintroduction of Madeira wine in the US which had effectively disappeared following Prohibition after being one of the most widely consumed alcoholic drinks.
Writing to his London partners to inform them of his uncle's death, he also requested five pipes of Madeira wine: "As this wine is for the use of my house, I hope you will be careful that I have the best."
I accordingly went as soon as I was dressed, and found that his landlady had arrested him for his rent, at which he was in a violent passion: I perceived that he had already changed my guinea, and had a bottle of Madeira and a glass before him.
