Coe's Broadway theater career began in 1964 and included turns as M. Lindsey Woolsey opposite Angela Lansbury in the original cast of Jerry Herman's Mame and as Owen O'Malley in On The Twentieth Century alongside John Cullum, Imogene Coca, Kevin Kline and Madeline Kahn, as well as creating the role of David in the original Broadway cast of George Furth and Stephen Sondheim's Company.
Major characters included Jack Reilly (Gregory Harrison), an old-style newspaperman (so old-style that he actually went sneaking around in a trench coat); Angela Villanova (Melina Kanakaredes), a young writer who seemingly alternated between admiring Reilly and being in love with him; Nan Chase (Madeline Kahn), a gossip columnist somewhat in the vein of Rona Barrett; and Tony Amato (Anthony DeSando), the paper's leading sports columnist.
They met and performed together while Theatre Arts majors at Hofstra University,on Long Island, New York, where they worked alongside Francis Ford Coppola, Lainie Kazan, and Madeline Kahn.
