The AVE (high-speed rail) link was established on the Madrid–Jaén high speed railway line between Madrid – Atocha station and Jaén station, providing travellers with frequent connections everyday.
It is named after Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, who also reigned in Spain as Charles I. However, it is commonly referred to as Plaza de Atocha, because it is where Madrid Atocha railway station is located.

The attacks, consisting of coordinated bombings in Barajas Airport and the train stations of Atocha and Chamartín, killed 7 people and injured a further 100.
It was opened on February 8, 1991 and it is located between Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios stations.
