Possibly the Theatre's biggest coup was the world premiere of Way Down East, the melodramatic stage play written by Charlotte Blair Parker, which proved to be one of the biggest American stage success of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

It was subsequently given in Berlin at the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtisches Theater on September 26, 1884, and in New York City in German at the Thalia Theater in 1885 and in English at the Standard Theatre in 1885 and again in 1887 with Lillian Russell as Carlotta, Eugène Oudin as Count Erminio and J. H. Ryley.
He lit many productions for The Manhattan Theatre Club ("Ashes", "End of Play", "Valley Song", "Playland", "The Last Yankee", and "Eleemosynary" among others) and continues to design for regional theatres throughout the country.
Off-Broadway credits include Fabulation (Playwrights Horizons), Jitney (Second Stage), Holiday Heart (Manhattan Theatre Club), Before It Hits Home (NYSF) and Auturo Ui (Classic Stage Company).
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove, Manhattan Theatre Club has grown since its founding in 1970 from an Off-Off Broadway showcase into one of the country’s most acclaimed theatre organizations.

During the 2007-2008 New York theatre season, Manhattan Theatre Club presented the play at the Biltmore Theatre in a production starring Mary Catherine Garrison, Mary Beth Hurt, Jennifer Ikeda, Elizabeth Marvel, Martha Plimpton, Ana Reeder, and Marisa Tomei.
