Marguerite Yourcenar, a Belgian-born French novelist and essayist, and the first woman elected to the Académie française, is the daughter of Fernande de Cartier de Marchienne, from the Cartier family related to the Cartier castle.
•
Emile de Cartier de Marchienne, Marguerite Yourcenar's uncle, who served as the Belgian ambassador in China at the start of the 20thcentury (1910-1917), ordered the construction of a Cartier castle replica, to serve as the Belgian legation building in Beijing.
He finally ended up at Princeton University, where he graduated with an A.B. in 1978, and was a Senior Editor at Farrar, Straus and Giroux from 1978 to 1989, working with such authors as Joseph Brodsky, Elias Canetti, Carlos Fuentes, Alberto Moravia, Les Murray, Philip Roth, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Marguerite Yourcenar.
Ferdinande Louise Marie Ghislaine (Fernande) de Cartier de Marchienne (Suarlée, 23 February 1872-Bruxelles 19 June 1903) was the Belgian mother of Marguerite Yourcenar.
She was a member of the salon of Natalie Clifford Barney and was read by (and presumably influenced) writers such as Marguerite Yourcenar; Hélène de Monferrand was strongly influenced by her.
