As a company grade officer, Wilson served as an Air Traffic Control Officer at Yuma and Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Stations and as an Instructor at Marine Corps Development and Education Center's Instructional Management School.
He completed initial aircrew training at 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and was then transferred to 1st Marine Brigade, MCAS Kaneohe, Hawaii.

From August 2004 through June 2005, Lieutenant General Trautman served as the Commanding General, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; Deputy Commander, U. S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific; and Deputy Commanding General, III Marine Expeditionary Force Hawaii.
He was named to the Naval Station in Pearl Harbor as command chaplain in 1997, and served in the same capacity at Marine Corps Base Hawaii from 2000 to 2004.
MCBH is home for the 3rd Marine Regiment, Marine Aircraft Group 24, Combat Logistics Battalion 3 (CLB-3) 3rd Radio Battalion, and the Navy's Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 2.
There also are scaled-down replicas at three marine bases: just outside the front gate of Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, adjacent to the parade deck at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina, and just inside the main gate at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kāne'ohe Bay, Hawaii.
Williams then flew the F-8 Crusader at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii for two years before joining VMF(AW)-235, flying the F-8E Crusader from Da Nang in the Republic of Vietnam.

In all, 960 different training events were schedule and 96 percent were completed in all areas of the Hawaiian operations area, encompassing Kāneʻohe Bay, Bellows Air Force Station, the Pacific Missile Range Facility, and the Pohakuloa Training Area.
His next assignment, in Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Air Station, Hawaii, was as a rifle platoon commander and then rifle company commander in the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines.
