In 1991 German anti drug activists Brigitte Berendonk and Werner Franke were able to save several doctoral theses and other documents written by scientists, working for the East German drug research program.

Her rival, Marita Koch, complained in a letter that Bärbel received higher doses of steroids than her because she had relatives in the company Jenapharm.
This places her tenth on the German all-time list, behind Marlies Göhr, Marita Koch, Silke Gladisch, Katrin Krabbe, Heike Drechsler, Bärbel Wöckel, Annegret Richter, Romy Müller, Monika Hamann, Inge Helten and Ingrid Auerswald.
At the 1983 World Championships she finished seventh in the individual event and won another gold medal in the relay, with teammates Kerstin Walther, Sabine Busch and Marita Koch.
