After conversion, the Anticosti class was used for minesweeping training in preparation for the Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel Project, what would later become the Kingston class of patrol vessels in the late 1990s.
In 1992, Quebec-based engineering firm SNC-Lavalin was the successful bidder for the Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel Project which would build what is today known as the Kingston class or the MCDV.
This change in ownership saw construction of the MCDVs modularized with sections of the vessels constructed at Irving Shipbuilding facilities in Georgetown, PEI and Shelburne, NS for later assembly in Halifax.
•
The federal government's procurement agency, the Department of Public Works, placed a Request for Proposal in 1988 to Canadian shipbuilders for construction of 12 MCDVs.
•
Fenco sub-contracted various portions of the project to first tier subcontractors ThomsonâCSF Canada, MacDonald Dettwiler & Associates, Tecsult Eduplus Inc and Halifax Dartmouth Industries.
