Dower house

Well-known royal dower-houses in London have included Clarence House, Marlborough House, and (for a time during the 18th century) Buckingham Palace (then known as "Buckingham House").

Marlborough House

A cupola inserted in the ceiling is surrounded by paintings by Orazio Gentileschi for the Queen's House, Greenwich, 1636.


Arighi Bianchi

In the early 20th century, the store supplied furniture to Marlborough House and Sandringham House, by royal appointment of Edward VII, Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary.

Badminton, Gloucestershire

The village of Badminton played host to the Dowager Queen Mary during the Second World War, who was evacuated from Marlborough House in London to take up residence at Badminton House for the duration of the war.

Burlington Fine Arts Club

The club had its roots in the informal Fine Arts Club, a gathering of amateur art enthusiasts that met in Marlborough House in 1856, moving to South Kensington from 1857.
