3 unusual facts about Martin Behaim

Henricus Martellus Germanus

Around 1489 or 1490, he produced a world map which was remarkably similar to the terrestrial globe later produced by Martin Behaim in 1492, the Erdapfel.

Martin Behaim

During his visit to his native home in Nuremberg, in collaboration with the painter Georg Glockendon, Martin Behaim constructed his familiar terrestrial globe between 1491 and 1493, one of two globes, which he called the Erdapfel (literally, the earth apple).

In 1992, it has been moved to the Vienna University of Technology, to be studied at high resolution by the Behaim Digital Globe Project.

Diogo Cão

That Cão, on his second voyage of 1484-1486, was accompanied by Martin Behaim (as alleged on the latter's Nuremberg globe of 1492) is very doubtful.

Georg Glockendon

The Erdapfel of Martin Behaim is the best known of his painted works, the majority of which remain unidentified.
