It was during this expedition that he made the acquaintance of the Finnish missionary Martti Rautanen (1845-1926) at Olukonda, and named the tree Ricinodendron rautanenii after him.
In turn Schinz was impressed by Rautanen and named the tree Ricinodendron rautanenii after him, while the German botanist and authority on Lythraceae, Bernhard Koehne, commemorated him in Nesaea rautanenii.
In the 1880s Martti Rautanen, nicknamed Nakambale, became missionary at Olukonda and initiated the building of a church in 1889, and a missionary house in 1893.
