His family moved in 1797 from Southampton, Long Island to Johnstown, then in Montgomery County, New York, where his father James Hildreth (d. 1818) became judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

Diversified was founded as Community Broadcasting Service in 1949 when Horace A. Hildreth, the former governor of Maine, president of Bucknell University and U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, purchased the license for Maine's first radio station, WABI-AM.
He married Ann Tallmadge (1775–1809), a sister of James Tallmadge, Jr. and Matthias B. Tallmadge.
