In March 1999 barrister David Risstrom was elected to the Melbourne City Council, following numerous local government campaigns in Victoria.

In 1999, Risstrom became the first member of the Australian Greens to be elected to public office anywhere in the state of Victoria when he was elected to Melbourne City Council with 9% of the primary vote under the proportional representation electoral system then in place.

Ivan Deveson AO (born 18 February 1934) is an Australian businessman and the 100th Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1996 to 1999 after a period of Commissioners controlling the Melbourne City Council.
