Erinne Willock

: 7th UCI World Championships (Road), Mendrisio (SUI)

In 2009, Willock scored a career-high, seventh place as the top North American cyclist in the 124-km women's road race at the UCI World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland.

Gerardo dei Tintori

The people of Olgiate also spread the cult of Saint Gerardo into nearby towns: in 1740 the historian Antonio Francesco Frisi of Monza lists over 14 places where the saint was venerated, including Como and Mendrisio.

Mendrisio railway station

The station is on the Swiss Federal Railways Gotthard railway, between Lugano and Chiasso, and is also the junction for the Mendrisio–Stabio railway, currently only used for freight traffic, but being rebuilt as an international connection to Varese.

Mendrisio–Stabio railway

Since 1993 the line is also used by touristic trains on the re-opened line to Malnate.

The Swiss section remained active, and is now used only as a freight railway for the industries around Stabio.

Valmorea railway

Originally built as Olona Valley railway, to serve the industrial complexes of this region, it was later prolonged until the Swiss border by Valmorea, reached in 1926, where it continued as the Mendrisio–Stabio railway.

Varese railway station

As from 2013, Varese railway station will become international, upon the opening of the new Varese–Arcisate (I)–Stabio (CH)–Mendrisio railway, which will branch off at Arcisate from the Varese-Porto Ceresio line, and then enter Switzerland at Stabio.

On the new line, regional trains will link Varese with Mendrisio, and there will also be direct trains between Malpensa Airport and Lugano.
