4 unusual facts about Middle Jurassic

Coleorrhyncha

In 2013 a new species of Progonocimicidae, the fossil species, Cicadocoris assimilis, was discovered in rocks of the Middle Jurassic in China.

Meropeidae

There are two extinct genera, Boreomerope antiqua Novokschonov from the Middle Jurassic of Siberia and Thaumatomerope with three described species all from the Madygen Formation in Kyrgyzstan; as such, the extant members of this family can be considered living fossils.

Rhopalidae

The oldest fossil rhopalids described are from the Middle Jurassic of Inner Mongolia, discovered from the Haifanggou Formation.

Shepton Montague Railway Cutting

Shepton Montague Railway Cutting, which was part of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, exposes the most important known section of Fuller's Earth Rock (Middle Jurassic) in England.

Caytoniales

The first fossils to be identified in this order were discovered in a Middle Jurassic formation in Yorkshire.

Atlasaurus

It is known from a nearly complete skeleton with a skull found at Wawmda, in the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian-Callovian) Tiougguit Formation, Azilal Province, Tadla-Azilal region, Morocco.

Callovosaurus

This specimen was collected from the middle Callovian–age (Middle Jurassic) Peterborough Member (former Lower Oxford Clay) of the Oxford Clay Formation of Fletton, near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England.

Christian Malford

The village is known to palaeontologists as a rediscovered Lagerstätte, a site of remarkably preserved fossils, in this case in the Middle Jurassic Oxford clay, in which a chance discovery in the 19th century uncovered thousands of exquisitely preserved ammonites, fish and crustaceans.

Fabrosauridae

The recent discovery of a Middle Jurassic primitive ornithischian, Agilisaurus louderbacki, found in the Xiashaximiao Formation of Zigong, Sichuan Basin, China, has led to paleontologists learning more about the phylogeny of fabrosaurids.

Lichnomesopsyche

Lichnomesopsyche is an extinct genus of mesopsychid mecopteran which existed in what is now China during the middle Jurassic period.

Orussidae

Fossils have been reported from the Lower Jurassic of Grimmen (Lower Toarcian, Germany) and the Middle Jurassic of Daohugou (China), which display a mixture of characters associated with Orussoidea and with basal Apocrita, thus it is impossibly to classify these specimens which one of these clades.

Paleontology in Louisiana

During the Middle Jurassic, Bathonian and Callovian, the stretching of the crust between North and South America created a broad basin within the continental crust that opened initially to the Pacific Ocean and later to the Atlantic Ocean.

Rhoetosaurus

Rhoetosaurus (meaning "Rhoetos lizard"), named after Rhoetus, a titan in Greek Mythology, is a genus of sauropod dinosaur from the Jurassic (?Middle Jurassic) of what is now eastern Australia.
