The river, whose name means "Frozen Dark One", was named after Mieji-juku, the 56th post town on the Nakasendō, a historical trading route.

The same area features a number of other attractions such as Ena Gorge, Iwamura Castle (made famous in the tale of the "Castle Mistress"), Japan Taishō Village (a theme park), the cities of Toki and Mizunami, which are well known for the production of Mino ceramic ware and Oribe ware; Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku, two stations on the Nakasendō, a road that connected Kyōto and Edo; Meiji Mura, and Inuyama Castle.
In a Yomihon (Ehon Sayo Shigure) from the Edo period, at Minakuchi, Ōmi (now Kōka, Shiga Prefecture) there was a person who made a livelihood out of selling jōsen (candy made from the sap of Rehmannia glutinosa, boiled into a paste) who was killed by a robber.
However, in between Yoshiwara-juku and Kanbara-juku there was a traditionally unnumbered intermediary post station where a branch road led to the pilgrimage location of Mount Minobu.
After graduating from Tenri University, Ninomiya entered the Shoki Juku under the instruction of Isao Okano.
However, he would find championship success again the following month, for on June 28, he – along with Iwasa and newest Tozawa–juku member Shinobu – would capture the Open the Triangle Gate Titles from Shingo Takagi, YAMATO and Gamma.
Kiyosu-juku was originally formed as a castle town for Kiyosu Castle; however, the original town was decimated when much of the populace was moved to Nagoya Castle.

The Meiji emperor stayed in the honjin while traveling during his reign.
After graduating from Chuo University in Tokyo in 1968, he moved back to Okinawa and ran a juku, a private school.
Takagi returned on May 6, teaming with Hulk to defeat the Tozawa-juku team of Akira Tozawa and Keni'chiro Arai; Onodera, using his former ring name Yamato, returned the following night, teaming with Hulk, Kong and Takagi to defeat Muscle Outlaw'z.
In cases of bad weather or high waters, they were forced to stay several days (or even several weeks) beside the river at post stations such as Shimada-juku or Kanaya-juku.
Seba-juku was originally established in 1614, along with Shiojiri-juku and Motoyama-juku, in order to accommodate the change in the Nakasendō's route.
In 1878 Katayama travelled to Tokyo to apprentice as a printer while he studied at a small preparatory school, the Oka Juku, where he formed a friendship with Iwasaki Seikichi (岩崎 清吉), nephew of one of the founders of Mitsubishi.

In April 2003, he founded the Koga Juku, a judo school for young children, in Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki.
A quiet portion of the original highway has been preserved between Tsumago and Magome, the next post town (also restored).

Prior to becoming part of the Nakasendō, it was the tenth of eleven stations along the Kisoji, a minor trade route running through the Kiso Valley.

During the Edo period, however, its mountaintop location gave it wonderful views of both Tsumago-juku and Midono-juku.
All Sankai Juku works since 1982 were premiered at and co-produced by Théâtre de la Ville, Paris.
The Yoshiwara-juku was originally located near the present-day Yoshiwara Station, on the modern Tōkaidō Main Line railway, but after a very destructive tsunami in 1639, was rebuilt further inland, on what is now the Yodahara section of present-day Fuji.
