In August 1513 Home led 3000 Borders Horse on a raid into England, en route back to Scotland laden with booty, his force was ambushed by William Bulmer of Brancepeth Castle at Milfield, and was routed losing 1000 men and his standard.
In the month before the tragedy of Flodden, some Scots, under Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home, were returning from a raid into England where they had burnt several villages.

Bede tells us that a residence was built at Maelmin to supersede Edwin of Northumbria's residence of Ad-Gefrin at Yeavering.

Laden with booty which they had "lifted", Home's men were surprised by a band of English under Sir William Bulmer of Brancepeth in County Durham.
On 9 June 1544, Sir William and his colleagues met at Milfield near Wooler and decided to march on Jedburgh.
