Prior to his 25 years as principal of the BSO, he also held positions with the Kansas City Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra.
She also taught many significant orchestral musicians and pedagogues, such as Simon Fischer, author of Basics, Paul Kantor, pedagogue at Rice University, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Robert Chen, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (also doubling in the Seattle Symphony) concertmaster Frank Almond, and Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim.
In August 2007, Andreas Delfs, current music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, officially became principal conductor of the Honolulu Symphony.
He subsequently took posts as associate conductor of the Kansas City Philharmonic and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
The broadcast schedule consists of playlists announced by local hosts, as well as nationally syndicated broadcasts, including those from the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera during their seasons, the Exploring Music program with host Bill McGlaughlin, and the Radio Netherlands Live! at the Concertgebouw series.
The piece was composed on commission from the Milwaukee Symphony, and is described by Adams as an "out take" from Act III of the opera he was working on at the time, Nixon in China.

Since 2000 he has been Co-Principal Horn of the Aspen Festival Orchestra, and he has also performed as a guest Principal Horn with the orchestras of Toronto, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Cincinnati, San Francisco, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
