From the mid eighties on, Barceló's work (paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramics) has been subject of numerous shows worldwide in renowned galleries (Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Leo Castelli) important museums and at other cultural sites.

Initially the Avant-garde, Art Brut and American abstract Expressionism (e.g. Pollock had a big impact on him) influenced Barceló's work, on the other hand he was always particularly interested in the Baroque paintings of Diego Velázquez, Tintoretto and Rembrandt.

Miquel Barceló's work (paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramics) is nowadays exclusively represented by Galerie Bruno Bischofberger in Zürich.

In 2004 Barceló's watercolours, illustrating Dante's Divine Comedy, were shown at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The museum holds works by numerous artists, including Miquel Barceló, Joseph Beuys, Joan Brossa, Juan Francisco Casas, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Eduardo Chillida, Salvador Dalí, Óscar Domínguez, Manolo Millares, Joan Miró, Juan Muñoz, Jorge Oteiza, Pablo Palazuelo, Pablo Picasso, Antonio Saura, Antoni Tàpies, Juan Uslé, and Darío Villalba.
In the 1980s, Bischofberger's gallery became known for showing works from the Italian, German, and American "Neo-Expressionist" painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, George Condo, and Jiri Georg Dokoupil; as well as showing Andy Warhol, Miquel Barceló, Peter Halley and Mike Bidlo.
