Under Daily Times, Miss Nigeria consisted of Traditional, Swimsuit, Talent, Interview, and Evening Gown competitions, with contestants competing in zonal contests in different parts of the country where the first, second, and third-place winners were selected to compete at the grand finale in Lagos.

Otohwo, who had represented Nigeria at Miss Universe 2009, posed for photographs wearing a bikini at the beach which enraged the Miss Nigeria organisers who had promoted their swimsuit-free pageant as a wholesome institution, and pointed out that the competition was dormant from 2004 to 2010, therefore making it impossible for the organisers to have crowned a Queen in 2009.
