Barton is one of the few places in England still to elect a Mock Mayor.
Examples of this practice can be found in Penzance, Cornwall; Polperro, Cornwall; Mylor, Cornwall; St Germans, Cornwall; Woodstock, Oxfordshire; Barton, Gloucester; and Helston, Cornwall (where the Mock or Sham Mayor was known as the Mayor of St Johns).

The modern Gloucester Day has recently included a parade by the Mock Mayor of Barton, an office created after Barton was moved outside of the limits of the city following the restoration of Charles II.
