The late realization of these unanticipated problems caused the company to give up its earlier goal to link the Potomac and the Ohio Valley, and the new goal was to improve other rivers in the watershed such as the Shenandoah, the Monocacy, and the Antietam.
Some farmers in the Monocacy watershed participate in the national Conservation Security Program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), designed to help stem pollution due to erosion and pollutant runoff from farming.

Maria Furnace is a South Mountain populated place on Toms Creek west of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, that was the location of an 1822 blast furnace until operations were moved to Caledonia.
