The first publication was in 1859 when it appeared in her husband Samuel Orchart Beeton's publication the The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine serialised in 24 monthly installments.

Recipes abound, for example those given by Eliza Acton (1845) and Mrs Beeton (1861), and modern commercial examples are to be found in most cake shops and in most supermarket cake departments.
The business prospered throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries so that the company were able to claim that every single Royal household in Europe owned an Esse, and included Auguste Escoffier, Mrs Beeton, Florence Nightingale and Captain Scott among their famous clients.
In the BBC drama The Secret Life of Mrs Beeton, broadcast in 2006, Henry Dorling was played by Jim Carter.
