The village is home to Sir Ken Morrison CBE (born 20 October 1931) who was the executive chairman of Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc, the fourth largest supermarket group in the United Kingdom.

After 1086, the manor was the possession of Robert de Mortain, who tenanted some of the land to Niel Fossard and some to Robert de Stutevil.

From here the route continues across the flat plains of Swale past Kemsley and Iwade, the last villages on the mainland before the Isle of Sheppey.
The legend tells that Hajrat Swale Mohammad, named afterwards as ‘Bhujakhia Pir’ had come to Orissa in the 16th century and devoted himself to the service of mankind, especially to the service of Cholera victims.

Aside from the references to the school's location and benefactor, the etymology of 'Swale' can be explained by reference to the local stretch of water, The Swale, which runs between Sittingbourne and the Isle of Sheppey and also lends its name to the local Borough Council.
They are one of, if not the last waterfalls on the Swale before the river reaches the lower country grounds of the Vale of Mowbray, their normally medial size can be affected easily, much like the rest of the Swale, by heavy rain and flooding, making for dramatic viewing.

Another contemporary walled ditch called Scots Dyke running from Stanwick as far south as the river Swale at Richmond (and possibly also north over the Tees at Gainford) may have formed part of a general defensive mechanism for the hill peoples in the area.
It was briefly held by James Riddell and his son from 1777 to around 1872 before being bought once again by the lord of the manor of Ellerton-on-Swale.
