The brother of hockey player Ernie Hicke, he was a member of the AHL First All-Star Team in 1959, recipient of the Dudley 'Red' Garrett Memorial Trophy Award for Top Rookie in the AHL in 1959, recipient of the John B. Sollenberger Trophy for Top Scorer in the AHL in 1959, recipient of the Les Cunningham Award for MVP in the AHL with Rudy Migay in 1959, and in 1959, 1960, and 1969, he played in the NHL All-Star Game.
In 1989–90, McLean appeared in his first NHL All-Star Game in Pittsburgh and was the top goaltender at the Skills Competition by allowing the fewest goals against for the Breakaway Relay and Rapid Fire events.
During his career, he officiated 2,373 regular season games and two All-Star games as well as Rendez-vous '87, and four Canada Cups.
