The type species, Deflexula fascicularis, was originally described in 1901 as Pterula fascicularis by Giacomo Bresadola and Narcisse Théophile Patouillard.
In addition, he was a collaborator towards Narcisse Théophile Patouillard's publication of Catalogue raisonné des plantes cellulaires de la Tunisie.
He became a leading specialist in various areas, in which he enjoyed close collaborations: Agaricomycetes, with Quélet and Adalbert Ricken; Aphyllophoromycetideae, with Narcisse Théophile Patouillard and the Canon Hubert Bourdot; and finally Discomycetes with Boudier.
During his career, he took numerous scientific trips throughout Europe — travels where he met and studied with scientists that included Jacob Georg Agardh (1813-1901), Alfred Mathieu Giard (1846-1908), Louis Mangin (1852-1937) and Narcisse Théophile Patouillard (1854-1926).
Some unrelated genera, such as Cystoderma (Fayod 1889) and Limacella (Earle 1909), were removed from the genus whilst several related genera, including Leucocoprinus (Patouillard 1888), Macrolepiota and Leucoagaricus (Singer 1948), and Cystolepiota (Singer 1952), were segregated.
