Gilbert V. Hartke

He directed over 60 major productions at CUA, and several more for the National Players, a touring company he created.

National Players

After 63 consecutive seasons of touring, this acting company has given approximately 6,600 performances and workshops on plays by Shakespeare, O'Neill, Molière, Shaw, Kafka, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Stoppard and Peter Shaffer.

National Players was founded through the efforts of one man, Father Gilbert V. Hartke, the founder and long-time chair of the Speech and Drama department of The Catholic University of America.

The Claymores' first roster included five players sent to the club from the NFL, including quarterbacks Matt Blundin from the Kansas City Chiefs and Lee Williamson from the Houston Oilers; as with all World League teams, it included 7 "national" players, including wide-receiver Scott Couper.
