Among the nation's athletes were Sled Dowabobo, the oldest member of the team at age 29, who played for the nation's sporting debut.

Sled Dowabobo was given a spot in the men's lightweight category, after being chosen as one of the highest ranked Oceania athletes in any sporting discipline, without having qualified.

Meanwhile, weightlifter Itte Detenamo, the first athlete from Nauru to participate in three Olympic games, reprised his role as the nation's flag bearer for the second time at the opening ceremony.
