He was successful on a later attempt and in January 1940, he joined the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force (2NZEF) that was raised for service overseas.
Soldiers serving overseas in the NZEF were given a vote by the Expeditionary Forces Voting Act, 1914.

A long time member of New Zealand's volunteer forces he enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of World War I, and served with distinction on the Western Front.
In 1918, while serving in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War I, he was killed in action in Jerusalem; becoming one of 11 New Zealand rugby internationals to die during the conflict.
Albany is associated with the Desert Mounted Corps in that the mounted troops and the rest of the first detachment of the Australian Imperial Force and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (later know collectively as ANZACs) left Albany in a convoy of ships in November 1914 to join World War I.
