The Church of St Thomas of Canterburyis situated in the village of Kingswear in the English county of Devon, it stands in a slightly elevated position at the junction of Higher Street and Church Hill close to the railway station and the Dartmouth Lower Ferry and overlooks the River Dart.
Both this road, and Newbridge Avenue, are built on the former site of Haigs' distillery.

The origin of the modern town lies in the establishment of Cavalry Barracks (1815–1819) on land purchased from 3 local landlords: Eyre Powell of Great Connell, Ponsonby Moore of Moorefield and William Hannon of Kilbelin.
It is the birthplace of Arthur Wellesley Bayley who, with William Ford discovered the goldfields of Coolgardie in September 1892, Coolgardie being a town in the vicinity of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.
Large cruise ships are occasional visitors, with the largest visitor to date being the MV Royal Princess (30,277 GRT).
