McGuigan was part of the Newcastle Falcons academy scheme which saw several Falcons academy players link up with the school to continue their studies and academy training during post-16.

Meanwhile, Long spent 7 years at Bath, before joining Irish province Munster during the 2003 World Cup, after which he returned to England with Rotherham, who were relegated in 2004 and he travelled further north to join Newcastle Falcons.
He was selected to play for Quins in the 2009 Middlesex Sevens and in November that year made his first XV debut against Newcastle Falcons in the LV Cup.

He is a product of the Newcastle Falcons Junior Academy and signed for the First XV in 2009 after representing Blaydon RFC at a National Two Level.
