Botica joined the Wigan rugby league club in British league in 1990 in what was an exodus of All Black backs to rugby league including Matthew Ridge (Manly-Warringah), John Gallagher (Leeds) and John Schuster Newcastle).
He was assistant coach at the Newcastle Knights to Mal Reilly and Warren Ryan from 1997 to 1999, and then became head coach at English club Rochdale in December 1999.
