It was conceived and produced by Marlene and Dick Levine, who after attending the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island and the Fox Hollow Folk Festival in Petersburgh, New York, wanted to have a festival in their own community using local facilities.
Produced and directed by Lerner, the film was a documentary shot between 1963 and 1966 at the Newport Folk Festival that included performances by Buffy Sainte-Marie, Donovan, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Johnny Cash and Joan Baez.
The NEFFA festival was founded in 1944, long before several more famous folk festivals, such as the Philadelphia Folk Festival (1962) and the Newport Folk Festival (1959).
The past several years have seen Ollabelle on the road touring many states including Alaska, several European countries, and they have also played at the 2004 Newport Folk Festival, the 2007 South By Southwest music event held annually in Austin, Texas, and North Carolina's MerleFest, (2008).
In the summer of 2009, the band played US festivals Bonnaroo, Lollapalloza, the Newport Folk Festival, and Austin City Limits.
