3 unusual facts about Nicoya

Nicoya

This site appears to be larger than the rest; it exhibits low earthen mounds, and is particularly prized by local looters for its high-quality polychrome pottery and gold artifacts.

In early 2006, a group of researchers led by adventure writer Dan Buettner and supported by National Geographic Magazine, the National Institute on Aging, and Allianz Healthcare, designated Nicoya as a Blue Zone.

To give just one example, tribute in Nicoya was traditionally paid by one product that could be produced nowhere else in the region: cotton thread dyed purple with the secretion of a rare mollusk found on the Pacific Coast of the genus Murex.

2012 Costa Rica earthquake

There were reports of destroyed houses in the cantons of Hojancha, Nicoya, Nandayure, and Santa Cruz of the province of Guanacaste.

Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve

Among the dry forest specimens found we can mention the "Pochote" (Bombacopsis quinata), the "Guacimo" (Guazuma ulmifolia), and the "Indio Desnudo" (Bursera simaruba) but there are many other trees present that are native to the whole Nicoya Peninsula area.

José Antonio Lacayo de Briones y Palacios

As Sergeant Major, Lacayo endured a very difficult period in the area of Cartago near the Salto river, on the Costa Rican border of Nicoya and Nicaragua.

Pre-Columbian history of Costa Rica

The Costa Rican chieftains in the Intermediate Area had greater powers than those of Nicoya; for example, when Correque moved his residence from Ujarrás to Tucurrique, he brought with him many elders and gentlemen along with their sons, "because the place he wanted was settled and nobody contradicted him."

Sámara

The paving of the final 35 km of the drive, "Road 150" from Nicoya to Sámara on through to Carrillo was completed in early 2006.
