The union established branches at Broken Hill, Roan Antelope, Mufulira, Nkana and Nchanga, however it struggled to recruit members, and by 1939 membership had fallen to 1,000 out of 2,500 eligible European mineworkers.
He was raised in Nkana, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) where his father worked on the copper mines and was educated at Falcon College in Rhodesia and St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he rose to the presidency of the Oxford Union.
Two were built by Henschel for the Nkana copper mines in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1952, numbered 337 and 338 in the Rhodesia Railways number range.

Kapambwe was an African Cup of Champions Clubs Silver medalist in 1990 when Nkana lost in final against JS Kabylie of Algeria in Lusaka and won a record 7 leagues titles with Nkana.
In 1980, Simwala was appointed Rhokana United (who were by then renamed Nkana Red Devils) coach under Englishman Jeff Butler.
