In 1987, he was nominated by the Taoiseach, Charles Haughey to the 18th Seanad Éireann.
Two of its former presidents, Kit Ahern and Peggy Farrell, were nominated by the Taoiseach to serve in Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish parliament).

In June 1997, he was nominated by the Taoiseach, John Bruton as member of the outgoing 20th Seanad, serving until the elections in August 1997 for the 21st Seanad.
On 13 November 1946 he was nominated by the Taoiseach, Éamon de Valera as a member of 5th Seanad Éireann, filling a vacancy caused by the death of Professor William Magennis.
