In May 2006, a new bridge over Highway 54 in Research Triangle Park was completed to replace the old single track bridge that had substandard clearance and, because of its narrowness, caused a significant bottleneck on Highway 54.
After the Civil War, Alexander was a member of the North Carolina Senate in 1879, 1883, 1885, 1887, where he was instrumental in the establishment of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University; Alexander served on its board of trustees), and was president of the North Carolina Railroad.

Western North Carolina Railroad and the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway as well as the North Carolina Railroad, which Holt served as president, as well as in increasing the funding for public schools, the University, and the state hospitals.
The North Carolina Railroad trackage is currently leased to Norfolk Southern Railway.
