Horwood was 30 years old, and a lieutenant in the 1/6th Battalion, The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, British Army, attached to 1st Battalion, The Northamptonshire Regiment during the Second World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 17 October 1935 a Royal Scot Class locomotive of the London Midland and Scottish Railway was named The Northamptonshire Regiment at a ceremony at Northampton (Castle) Station.
