At the age of 18, he made an educational trip through Denmark and Germany, after which, in 1874, he settled as a tailor in Haderslev in Northern Schleswig.
Until 1864, Ærø was part of the Danish Duchy of Schleswig – the area of Schleswig/Southern Jutland is now divided between Denmark (Northern Schleswig) and Germany (Southern Schleswig).
Jørgen Zoëga (December 20, 1755 – February 10, 1809) was a Danish archaeologist and numismatist; born at Daler near Tønder, near the west coast of northern Schleswig.
