Mesaba, which operated as a Northwest Airlink regional airline, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 13, 2005, a result of downsizing occasioned by the earlier bankruptcy of Northwest Airlines.

In 1986, after the merger of Republic Airlines and Northwest Orient Airlines, Mesaba transitioned their codeshare partnership, and began operations as a Northwest Airlink carrier on behalf of Northwest Airlines.
Past airlines since 1955 have included Eastern Air Lines, Eastern Metro Express, Southern Airways, Republic Airlines, Piedmont Aviation, Sun Airlines, Southeast Air, South Central Air Transport (SCAT), Air Illinois, Ocean Airways, Continental Airlines, Continental Express and Northwest Airlink.
Northwest Airlines announced on February 7, 2008 that its regional partner Mesaba Airlines operating as Northwest Airlink will once again return with service to Dubuque with twice daily flights to and from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport using Saab 340 aircraft.
