Betweenm 1882 and 1887 he taught science in various Maine academies, in 1893 he was an assistant in the United States National Museum, in 1894 he became curator geology in the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, and from 1894 to 1904 he was lecturer on mineralogy at the University of Chicago.

Mary Elizabeth Pruett Farrington (May 30, 1898 – July 21, 1984), usually called Elizabeth P. Farrington, was publisher of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and an American statesman who served as delegate to the United States Congress for the Territory of Hawai'i.

Her father-in-law was the Territorial Governor of Hawai'i Wallace Rider Farrington.
He received a liberal schooling and studied medicine, practicing in Trumansburg.
Wiley was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his brother, Ariosto Appling Wiley, and served from November 3, 1908, to March 3, 1909.
