Two steam engines were used on the line during construction of the dam – the German built loco Eigiau (Orenstein & Koppel, No. 5668 of 1913), and a Bagnall 0-4-0ST, Works No.2080 of 1918.

The builder was Orenstein & Koppel of Berlin, one locomotive is preserved in working order at the Indian National Railway Museum, New Delhi.
Numbers 1001 and 1002 were built at VEB Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke (LEW); formerly Borsig Lokomotiv Werke (AEG), Hennigsdorf, and the production models at VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx, (LKM, formerly Orenstein & Koppel) Babelsberg.
Between 1897 and 1901 several 0-4-2ST narrow gauge saddle tank steam locomotives, built by Dickson Manufacturing Company of Scranton in Pennsylvania shortly before it merged with seven other manufacturing firms to form the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1901, were delivered to various gold mines on the Witwatersrand by Arthur Koppel, acting as importing agents.
