1970 Atlantic hurricane season

Impact was severest in Cuba, where flash flooding caused seven fatalities, destroyed several homes, forced the evacuation of 3,000 people in Oriente Province, and resulted in a shutdown of 16 sugar mills.

Cuban solenodon

Three were captured in 1974 and 1975, and subsequent surveys showed it still occurred in many places in central and western Oriente Province, at the eastern end of Cuba; however, it is rare everywhere.

José Ardévol

He was a professor in Cuba from 1936 to 1951, teaching in universities in Havana and Oriente.

Marímbula

With its roots in African instruments, the marimbula originated in the province of Oriente, Cuba in the 19th century.
