In 1524 the comital title passed to Gabriel von Salamanca, who had his new residence, Porcia castle built in the nearby town of Spittal an der Drau.
Gabriel was married twice: to Elisabeth of Eberstein in 1523 (d. about 1330) and to Elisabeth of Baden, daughter of Margrave Ernst of Baden-Durlach in 1533.

In 1523 he was elevated to the rank of an Imperial Freiherr (Baron) and Lord of Ehrenberg Castle in Tyrol as well as of Freyenstein and Karlsbach in Austria.

He retired to Carinthia and took his residence at Spittal an der Drau, where he had a luxuriant Renaissance palace built by Italian architects from 1533, today known as Schloss Porcia.
The larger centres of population in the Lower Bavarian Upland are Landau an der Isar, Pfarrkirchen, Eggenfelden, Bad Griesbach im Rottal, Ortenburg, Triftern, Rottenburg an der Laaber and Pfeffenhausen.
When the Ortenburg dynasty became extinct in 1418, their possessions passed to the Counts of Celje.
When the Counts of Celje themselves became extinct with the killing of Hermann's grandson Ulrich II in 1456, the Counts of Ortenburg-Neuortenburg claimed their ostensible rights, but failed to prove their kinship to the Carinthian Ortenburgs.

In 1072, one Adalbert of Ortenburg, probably a younger son of Count Hartwig II of Grögling-Hirschberg (d. 1068/69), served as a Vogt stattholder in the Carinthian possessions of the Bishops of Freising.
This area, known in German as Gottschee, was settled in the late 14th century by the Carinthian Counts of Ortenburg initially with colonists from the Ortenburg estates in Carinthia and Tyrol, and by other settlers who came from Austrian and German Dioceses of Salzburg, Brixen and Freising.
After the extinction of the Counts Ortenburg on 28 April 1418, the Counts of Celje inherited their area holdings, expanding the castle into a formidable fortress and renaming it Schloss Grauenwarth, although the surrounding settlement retained the Slavicised Latin name Kostel.
He marched against Carinthia from his Tyrolean residence at Bruck Castle, crossing the border at Oberdrauburg and occupying Spittal to lay siege to the Ortenburg fortress.
